General Guidelines
- Make up a "Terms of Reference", (TOR).
- Define the problem clearly
- Outline your proposed work
- Get TOR endorsed by organisation guide
- tentative time estimates/deadlines
- "Background papers"/Interim reports
Do not wait only for face-to-face discussion
- Use all possible channels of communication.
Discussions with guides
- Be very attentive during discussion.
- Note down points of discussion / interaction.
- Summarize discussion /interaction to confirm correct understanding.
- At the end of the session
- In writing as early as possible
- Get an appointment for next discussion.
- Periodic reports toguide(s)- organisational as well as academic
- Respond promptly to all feed back.
- Note down (in a diary form) new learning achieved.
Plan of Action

Tips for Surveys
- Pilot test your questionnaire at least once with representative respondents;
- Prepare questionnaire in local languageif necessary.
- Have a guideline or checklist for interviews
- Review finished interview immediately after interview;
- Go back to get clarifications.
- Note down the elapsed time for the actual interview for each respondent.
- Note down difficulties encountered during data collection / field work
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Commence preliminary analysis even while field work is going on.
- Plan on alternative ways of organising data
- Check for meaningful inferences with preliminary analysis.
- Note down unusual data patterns / exceptions for appropriate reporting
Report Preparation
- Prepare an outline / structure of report.
- Write in as much detail as possible on
- Evolution of the scope and objectives
- Methodology – justification; why other methodologies were discarded
- Questionnaire and field work – if done
- Link findings / inferences / conclusions to organised data; items of questionnaire
Final Stages
- Prepare appropriate charts / graphs.
- Prepare a presentation to share with guide.
- Schedule the presentation before revising draft report. Note down all feedback.
- Seek permission to submit only draft report.
- Finalize report back at ASB
