Guidelines for Project / Independent Study in lieu of Course Work

Students who are considering the option of doing a project / independent study (P/I hereafter) in lieu of course work must consider the following:

  1. P/I option would be available only to students who have a B or better grade in the core course related to the project / study course. They must also have not more than 2 C grades in any of the core courses.
  2. P/I can be either for 2 credits or 3 credits.  No more than 4 credits can be through this option.
  3. This option would be available only in the first two terms of the 2nd year of the PGPM.
  4. The work through this option can be spread over more than one term.
  5. The student must identify a project or course structure in the case of independent study and also a guide. The student should submit a proposal duly endorsed by the guide for approval by ASB. The proposal should contain a detailed course outline, milestones and reference material (in the case of independent study); and objectives, appoach and methodology, project schedule and milestones, in case of a project. Medthod of evaluation may also be proposed; however, ASB in consultation with the guide would decide the method of evaluation to be adopted and inform the candidate.

  6.  The guide must be appraised of the following responsibilities expected of him/her:

      a. to spend an hour a week or once in 2 weeks to guide the students on the project. The more the interactions, the better the results that can be expected. Guidance shall be provided over email/ chat/ VoIP calls.

      b. to provide placemarks, guidance to reading material, research articles and anything else that would help the student accomplish the project to expectation.

            c. to provide a monthly feedback (fortnightly feedback if possible) to the designated faculty at ASB on the progress, strengths of the candidate and areas to work on.

            d. to provide clear objectives and deliverables right at the beginning of the project so that the exercise does not go waste for any stakeholder.

            e. to provide a final feedback after review at the end of the project to both student and faculty.

      7.  The student undertaking an independent study / project must do the following:

            a. Maintain a diary / log of all activities pertaining to the project

            b. Be prepared to be examined in a manner to be decided by the guide / ASB on all the background reading

            c. Submit forghtnightly progress reports in a format to be prescribed by ASB and endorsed by the guide.

            d. Submit an interim progress report/ presentation approximately midway during the project

            e. Submit a final report appropriately endorsed by the guide and make a presentation of the project work to designated examiner and the guide.

It is better that the students register for the full load of electives to begin with and confirm their  option of doing independent study only when their project is approved.
